Killaloe, County Clare, Ireland, stands on the River Shannon on the southern end of Lough Derg. It owes its origin to the 6th century monastic establishment of St. Lua, which first stood on a small island in the River Shannon, about 1km downstream from the Killaloe bridge. Later the monks moved to a more spacious ground on the mainland opposite. This monastic centre was called Cill Dálua, (Killaloe) or the Church of St. Lua. Killaloe remained an important centre for many centuries.

Today Killaloe is no longer “Capital of Ireland,” but still the Captial of Lough Derg, Ireland’s “Pleasure Lake.” It is the most important boating and fishing centre within the 3 counties of Clare, Limerick, and Tipperary. Fishing, cruising, boating, sailing and swimming are just part of the many activities on the lake adding to the rich heritage waiting to be explored in modern day Killaloe.

Lough Derg, Ireland’s “Pleasure Lake,” is today popular with cruisers and other pleasure traffic, as well as sailing & fishing.

Lough Derg, situated on the River Shannon, has an area of 118 km² (45.5 sq. miles) making it the third largest lake in Ireland and the second largest in the Republic. It is the most southernly of the Shannon lakes and its shoreline is shared by three counties, Clare on its west side, Tipperary to the east and Galway to the north.
